How to film a sunset time-lapse on iPhone
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerPut the phone on a steady stand, choose Time-lapse in the Camera app, start about 20–30 minutes before sunset, and let it run until after the sun has gone. Don’t touch the phone while it records.
Setup
- Phone on a tripod or wedged firmly.
- Frame with the horizon level.
- Tap and hold on the sky to lock focus and exposure if it keeps changing.
- Start Time-lapse and leave it.
Timing
Colour often peaks just after the sun disappears. Keep recording a little longer than you think.
Battery
Long time-lapses use battery. Start with a full charge or a power bank.
Questions
How long will the video be?
The iPhone adjusts speed automatically, so long recordings become short clips.
