Filming in cold weather: battery and phone tips
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerCold makes batteries deliver less power, so phones can drain fast or shut down. Keep the phone warm in an inside pocket between shots, carry a power bank, and let it warm up gradually before charging.
Why it happens
Lithium-ion batteries work less well in the cold. Apple says iPhone works best between 0° and 35°C ambient temperature; below that, battery life can drop temporarily.
Tips
- Keep the phone in an inside pocket close to your body.
- Take it out only to film.
- Carry a power bank, also kept warm.
- Use gloves that work with touchscreens, or the volume button as a shutter.
Condensation
Going from freezing outside to a warm room can cause condensation. Let the phone warm up slowly, in a bag or pocket, before using or charging it.
Questions
Will the cold damage my phone?
Battery performance usually returns when it warms up. Avoid extreme temperatures for long periods.
