Keeping your phone safe while filming abroad
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerUse a wrist or crossbody strap, don’t leave a propped-up phone unattended in crowds, turn on Find My and Stolen Device Protection, and back up your footage daily.
Physical safety
- Wrist or lanyard strap.
- Stay close to a phone on a tripod.
- Be aware near roads where bikes and scooters pass.
Settings
- Find My iPhone on.
- Stolen Device Protection (Settings › Face ID & Passcode) on supported iOS versions.
- A strong passcode.
Protect your footage
Back up every night to iCloud or a drive, so losing the phone doesn’t mean losing the trip.
Questions
What if it’s stolen?
Mark it as lost in Find My, contact your carrier and report it to police for insurance.
